Chandare dropped the fishing rod, picked up the catch of the day he had been stringing through a thin rope and ran up the bund to greet Kusumalatha.
He ignored Silibiris who was standing there. Chandare for all his rowdy bravado did not quite know what to say to the girl he had been perusing for years. He asked her the obvious. Was she is going home? She too asked the obvious, was he were fishing? He nodded while tentatively holdin...g out the line of fish to her.
Kusumalatha was a vegetarian. She hated the smell of fish but accepted the unpleasant gift totally ignoring the gobsmacked look on Silibiris face.
Silibiris got on his bike, turned around and sped away.
Kusumalatha came to her senses, still holding the smelly gift, mumbled something to Chandare and hurried away.
Chandare stood on the bund, alone, looking at Silibiris disappearing around the bend in one direction and Kusumalatha virtually running in the opposite direction leaving him high and dry. He scratched his head, not knowing what to think of it all, he went back to his fishing rod. His, heart filled with high expectation.
As soon as Kusumalatha was out of Chandare s view she threw away the disgusting gift of fish and ran all the way home, crying.
Kusumalatha avoided Silibiris ever since the triangular meeting on the bund.
Silibiris had no idea it was Kusumalatha who had been instrumental in getting him to apply for the Government job.
Meanwhile encouraged by Kusumalatha uncharacteristically accepting his gift of fish, Chandare entered the scene with renewed vigour.
While Kusumalatha had absolutely no interest in Chandare, she made it known to Silibiris via the lasses at the Kumbuk tree bathing spot that Chandare was in hot pursuit of her.
She only wanted to make Silibiris jealous.
Silibiris was too ignorant of the ways of women to comprehend such subtleties.
